Getting the most out of your home gym
Each year, tons of adults decide to make healthy changes in their lives, overhauling their diets and starting an exercise regimen. For Christmas, they get new fitness equipment to add to their home gym and start their New Year’s resolution. Fast forward seven months later and that equipment has accumulated a half inch of dust. So how do you avoid wasting your money and turning that home gym investment into a positive one? Here are several tips to get the most out of your home gym:
Space
How big is your spare room that serves as a home gym? That will determine the size and amount of equipment you can choose from. Get rid of clutter. Clutter makes the room feel smaller and cramped. Who likes to be in a cramped room, let alone work out? Nobody. When purchasing the equipment, don’t buy too much equipment or equipment that doesn’t fit well. Give yourself plenty of space to breathe and enjoy your workout space. It can serve as your “stress relief” room following a tough day at the office.
Goals
Everyone has different fitness goals and a favorite piece of equipment. Purchase equipment that will help you reach those milestones and that you will enjoy. If you like doing cardio and riding the stationary bike, this piece of equipment should be on your list. This will ensure that your investment doesn’t collect dust in the corner.
Variety
While you might have a favorite piece of equipment, it’s also good to have a variety. You don’t have to purchase it all at once. Slowly build up your home gym. Already have a cardio machine? Add a kettlebell or some dumbbells to the mix. These are great resistance training tools and it can add more to your workout, making sure you don’t get bored. Kettlebells and dumbbells are also excellent because you do not need a whole lot of space and can perform a variety of different full-body exercises.
Your Dream Gym
This is your own personal gym. Make it your dream and something you want to use. Just because everyone else is buying a certain piece of equipment, try it out and see if you like it before making that investment. Just remember, make sure the equipment fits in your space, is something you enjoy using and is lined up with your goals. It’s okay to think outside the box sometimes and try something new, but don’t keep adding machines that you will only use once and serve as a dust collector.
