What Muscles Do the Sled Work?
Whether you decide to push, pull or drag the sled, it’s a tool that can give you a full-body workout as it targets your quads as much as your glutes, chest, shoulders, triceps, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors and core. It's a great tool much like resistance bands and treadmills. Add more weight for shorter distance resistance, or count on lower weight impact for a longer training session - it’s your choice and the benefits are guaranteed.
How do I pick the right sled and setup?
Choose a flat-base sprint sled for speed sessions and small spaces, a push/pull dog-style sled when you want both high and low handles, and a competition frame when you plan to stack more plates. Match the sled to your surface, such as turf, rubber or smooth concrete. Use a harness for forward drags and a rope with a carabiner for hand-over-hand pulls. Most sleds load with Olympic plates.
Any programming and safety tips?
Start light and increase load until you keep steady leg drive with a braced core. Use short pushes for power and longer drags for conditioning. Mix directions: forward pushes, backward drags to hit the quads, and rope pulls for upper-back and grip. Keep the straps clear of your feet, set a clear lane, and avoid scraping across sharp edges to protect the base.
