From the breezy coasts of Western Australia to the suburban driveways of Christchurch, home training culture across Australia and New Zealand has taken on a life of its own. At Flex, we see the trends unfolding firsthand through our community, customer submissions, and gear preferences.

Here’s a peek into what the Flex Fam are really doing with their home gyms and what’s helping them stay consistent and strong all year round.

1. Garage Gyms Rule the Suburbs

The garage is the most popular space for a home gym setup and for good reason. With airflow, space to drop weights, and a door to swing open during summer sessions, it’s the ideal functional zone.

The most popular combos? A solid squat rack, barbell, weight plates, and an adjustable bench. This simple but powerful foundation covers everything from full-body strength to accessory work without cluttering the house. Check out one of our ready to go packages here.

2. Strength Training Still Reigns Supreme

Compound lifts are the cornerstone of most Flex Fam training sessions. From back squats and deadlifts to bench presses and bent-over rows, it’s clear that functional strength is top of mind.

This shift away from fluff and toward high-impact movements isn’t just a trend, it’s a smarter way to train for longevity, strength, and visible results. Bonus: it makes equipment decisions easier too.

3. Conditioning the Smart Way

Not everyone wants to run a marathon in their living room but that doesn’t mean cardio is out.

Instead, we’re seeing a rise in interval-style conditioning: short, sharp circuits using battle ropes, air bikes, sleds, or simply bodyweight. These 15–30 minute sessions fit around work and kids, and they deliver real results in both stamina and fat burn.

4. Compact Equipment Is Winning Big

Aussies and Kiwis are getting clever with their space and their budgets. While power racks and barbells are still the core of many setups, compact add-ons are trending big.

Take the glute bench, a favourite for targeted lower-body training without taking up much room. Foldable benches, functional trainers, resistance bands, and even wall-mounted racks are also in high demand, especially for renters or smaller households.

5. Family-Friendly Fitness

One of the most heartening trends we’re seeing? Parents making fitness a part of family life.

Training while the kids scooter in the driveway, or even letting little ones join in on a yoga mat or play with resistance bands, has become the new norm. It’s less about the perfect workout and more about movement, consistency, and setting the tone for a healthy home.
