From garage gyms to commercial fitness facilities, choosing the right flooring is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Here's everything you need to know.

Most gym builds start with the exciting stuff - racks, barbells, and machines. Flooring often comes later in the planning process. But the surface you train on plays a bigger role than most people realise. The right flooring protects your concrete, hardwood, or tiles from impact, supports your equipment, and helps your space last for years to come.

The good news? Choosing the right option is straightforward once you understand the differences between materials, thicknesses, and use cases. This guide breaks it all down. From what those material terms actually mean, to exactly which Armortech product suits each space, so you can make a confident decision and build your gym on a solid foundation.

Why Gym Flooring Matters More Than You Think

Good flooring does five jobs simultaneously:

  • Floor protection: Dropped dumbbells, loaded barbells, cable machine bases. All of these create impact forces that destroy flooring over time.

  • Equipment protection: Without adequate cushioning under heavy machines, frame vibration wears out welds and bolts prematurely.

  • Joint protection and comfort: Standing on concrete for an hour of training increases fatigue and joint stress measurably. The right thickness under your feet matters for long sessions.

  • Noise & vibration reduction: Critical in multi-level buildings, shared walls, or home gyms attached to living spaces. Your neighbours (and family) will thank you.

  • Safety: Anti-slip surfaces, ramp-down edges, and minimised gaps all reduce injury risk - particularly important in commercial or martial arts environments.

Common Mistake

Installing rubber mats over carpet or wooden floating floors creates a "bouncing" effect under heavy equipment that accelerates mat degradation and causes equipment instability. Armortech rubber tiles perform best on bare concrete.

The flooring you choose also shapes how your gym looks, feels, and functions for years. A polished commercial facility with finished edges and matched corners communicates professionalism to members. A home gym with clean, consistent black rubber signals commitment and seriousness and Fleck Colours can help make your gym pop with a splash of colour and dimension as well as hide a little chalk between classes and cleans.

Understanding the Materials: The Full Armortech Flooring Range Explained

Here's an in-depth look at every product in the range, what makes each one unique, and who it's built for.

Armortech Commercial EPDM 20mm Rubber Floor System

This is Armortech's newest and most complete commercial flooring system — and it's genuinely a step above anything else in the range for professional installations. The key word is system: the main tiles, matching edge pieces, and corner pieces all work together with precision-engineered interlocking plastic tabs to create a seamless, professional surface.

The Tile

Each tile weighs a substantial 19.2kg — once it's down, it stays down. The dual-layer design (3mm EPDM top + 17mm high-density composite base) delivers surface durability and subsurface shock absorption simultaneously. The precision-engineered interlocking system includes 12 connector clips per tile, minimising gaps so dust and debris don't accumulate under the surface. Available in solid black or grey fleck to suit your aesthetic.

The Edge Piece

Unfinished edges are a trip hazard and a visual detractor. The Armortech Commercial EPDM Rubber Floor Edge solves both problems with a ramp-down profile that creates a smooth transition from floor level. It's engineered to connect perfectly with the tiles for a unified look — and it communicates the kind of quality that commercial facility operators need members to experience.

The Corner Piece

Where two edges meet, you need a purpose-built corner — not a field-cut improvisation. The Corner piece completes the EPDM system with a clean 90-degree finish that matches both the edge and tile surface exactly. In a commercial gym, these details are what separate a professional installation from a DIY job.

Armortech 1m × 1m Rubber Gym Flooring — Standard & Gloss (10mm & 15mm)

The proven workhorse of the Armortech range. These 1m × 1m rubber tiles have equipped thousands of gyms across Australia and New Zealand with a reliable, commercial-grade surface at a strong price point. The 800kg/m³ density makes them genuinely suitable for the heaviest commercial use. This isn't "home gym density" marketed as commercial.

The standard tiles are available in solid black, grey fleck, blue fleck, and red fleck for colour customisation. The Gloss variant adds a premium surface finish in black, grey fleck, or blue fleck. Perfect if your gym's aesthetic calls for a more polished, high-end look. Both come in 10mm and 15mm thicknesses (see Section 4 for guidance on choosing).

These tiles are certified to Australian and New Zealand standards along with fire retardant, non-porous, anti-slip, anti-static, anti-microbial, and 100% recyclable. The loose-lay, bevel-edge design means no adhesive is required and they can be cut with a sharp utility knife for custom sizing around obstacles.

Minimum Order Note

Rubber flooring tiles are sold with a minimum purchase of 10 tiles (unless combined with other items) to protect the integrity of the order for freight purposes. This covers approximately 10m² - typical for a small-to-mid home gym.

EVA Jigsaw Flooring - 20mm & 40mm (Reversible Blue / Red)

Where rubber is about protection and stability, EVA is about cushioning and versatility. These interlocking jigsaw mats are the go-to choice for martial arts schools, boxing gyms, MMA training, yoga studios, kids' play areas, and any space where people spend time on the ground or need fall protection. The reversible blue/red design lets you flip individual tiles to create zoned areas or refresh the look without replacing anything.

At 20mm and 40mm options, you get real choice: 20mm for standard training use and a less bulky feel underfoot, 40mm for heavy contact sports, grappling, and spaces where falls are common and impact absorption is the priority. The non-toxic, non-slip EVA material is water-resistant and easy to wipe down - important in sweaty martial arts environments.

Armortech Commercial Weightlifting Platform

Serious lifting demands a serious platform. The Armortech Commercial Weightlifting Platform is purpose-built for Olympic lifting and heavy barbell work. The kind of surface that competitive athletes and elite coaches expect. The assembled dimensions of 261cm × 141cm × 8.1cm give you a proper competition-adjacent footprint that fits a power rack or lifting station comfortably.

The engineering is intentional: a 130×107×4cm wooden board with 3.5cm rubber underlay forms the stable centre where you stand, while the 130×71×7cm rubber mat wings absorb the impact of dropped bars. The bamboo board adds both aesthetic elegance and functional rigidity. Noise reduction is built in, making this ideal for home garages and commercial spaces alike.

The optional Band Peg Attachment (4 pegs + 4 floor brackets, compatible with the Armortech V2 HD Platform) allows you to anchor resistance bands for banded deadlifts, squats, and accommodating resistance training - a technique increasingly used by powerlifters and serious strength athletes.

Pro Tip

If you're building a mixed-use facility, consider layering: rubber tiles as the base throughout, with a weightlifting platform in the lifting zone and EVA mats in the stretching/martial arts zone. Each material is doing the job it's best at.

Thickness Guide: 10mm, 15mm, 20mm & 40mm

Thickness is the most common question we hear and it's a genuinely important decision. Here's how to think about it:

10mm Rubber Tiles

The entry-level rubber option. At 10mm, you get solid floor protection and basic noise reduction, enough for cardio equipment, stretching zones, and lighter weight training. It's the choice when budget is a primary constraint or the space won't see heavy barbell drops.

15mm Rubber Tiles

The sweet spot for most gym applications. At 800kg/m³ and 15mm thick, these tiles handle the demands of serious home gyms and commercial facilities confidently. This is the right choice for weightlifting zones, cardio areas, free weight rooms, and functional training spaces. The bevel edge design means tight fitment across the full floor with minimal visible gaps.

20mm EPDM Tiles

The premium option for high-impact commercial environments. The additional 5mm comes with a meaningful upgrade in shock absorption capacity and the superior EPDM dual-layer construction. At 19.2kg per tile, these aren't going anywhere once installed. Choose 20mm when you're building a genuine commercial facility, a high-end personal training studio, or any space where dropped weights are regular and floor protection is non-negotiable.

20mm EVA Jigsaw

Twenty millimetres of EVA foam is appropriate for most martial arts training, boxing, yoga, and general functional fitness. It provides significant cushioning for falls and ground work while keeping the floor profile low enough to train comfortably barefoot.

40mm EVA Jigsaw

Forty millimetres is the serious martial arts and contact sports choice. Grappling, BJJ, MMA rolling, throwing practice — applications where people land hard and repeatedly need the full 40mm. It's also the right call for children's spaces where safety from falls is the primary concern.

Installation Guide: Tabs, Clips, and Loose-Lay

Classic Rubber Tiles (1m × 1m) - Loose-Lay System

The standard Armortech rubber tiles use a loose-lay, bevel-edge system — no glue, no adhesive, no tools required beyond a utility knife for cuts. The bevel edge creates a tight fitment that keeps the tiles locked together naturally under the weight of equipment and use. Here's how to install them correctly:

Rubber Gym Flooring Tile Installation Guide

1. Prepare the Surface
Install directly onto bare concrete for best results. Do not install over carpet, floating timber floors, or existing tiles, as these surfaces can create movement and destabilise the flooring.
Ensure the concrete is clean, dry, level, and free of dust or debris before laying tiles.

2. Start From a Straight Wall
Begin in one corner of the room and work outward. Lay tiles edge-to-edge, packing them tightly together. The bevelled edges are designed to create a snug fit and minimise visible seams.

3. Finishing the Final Row
Where possible, aim to finish with a full tile for the cleanest result.
If the final tile is a tight fit:

  • Push the tile firmly against the last row.

  • Create a slight peak in the centre of the tile by placing your forearms underneath and hands on either side.

  • Guide the front corners into place against the wall.

  • Once aligned, press down firmly on the tile to compress it into position.

4. Cutting to Fit (If Required)
For edges and walls, use a sharp utility knife and a strong straight edge.

  • Score the tile deeply several times.

  • Bend the tile along the score line and continue scoring until it separates cleanly.

  • Cutting from the underside can provide a neater finish.
For curved areas (columns, pipes, etc.), gradually score and shape the tile as needed.

5. No Sealing Required
Once the tiles are tightly installed, no glue, bonding, or sealing is required. The weight of the tiles combined with heavy gym equipment placed on top will provide additional stability.

Installation Warning

Avoid excessive bending or fold rubber tiles during installation - this can crack the material. Also avoid harsh chemical cleaners; standard mild detergent and water is all that's needed to maintain your rubber flooring.

Commercial EPDM System - Interlocking Clip System

The new EPDM commercial range uses a more engineered approach: 12 precision interlocking plastic connector clips per tile that snap the tiles together for a unified surface.

This system minimises gaps more effectively, which is critical in commercial environments where hygiene and appearance are paramount.

  • Plan your layout first. Measure the space precisely and calculate your tile count, then identify how many edge and corner pieces you'll need for exposed perimeters.

  • Install main tiles. Lay tiles from the centre of the space or from one wall or corner if not installing for a full room, connecting each tile using the 12 provided connector clips. The clips engage with a satisfying click that confirms a secure connection.

  • Add edge pieces. Attach the EPDM edge pieces to all exposed tile perimeters. These connect using the same system as the tiles, ensuring a seamless visual transition.

  • Install corner pieces last. Place the matching corner pieces at each exposed 90-degree corner. These complete the professional finish of the installation.

  • Inspect gaps. The precision-engineered system should produce near-zero visible gaps. Any tile that hasn't clicked securely should be re-engaged before placing equipment.

EVA Jigsaw Mats - Interlocking Puzzle System

EVA mats use a traditional puzzle-piece interlocking border system. Connect tiles by pressing the puzzle edges together -  no tools or clips required. The lightweight format means you can reconfigure, roll up, and relocate the surface easily, which is ideal for multipurpose spaces or temporary training zones. Mats can also be trimmed with a utility knife for custom sizing, just ensure the cut is facing the wall so you can still interlock with the last tile.
